Why metal buildings are hard to insulate

Steel conducts heat ~400× faster than wood, so any uninsulated purlin or girt becomes a thermal bridge.

The interior surface of a metal panel is below the dew point most of the year in humid climates — meaning condensation, rust, and dripping without a proper insulation and vapor plan.

The four systems

1. Vinyl/WMP-faced fiberglass batts ("laminated blanket"): the industry default during construction. R-11 to R-38 depending on thickness. Cheapest system but sags and compresses at purlins.

2. Long-tab banded fiberglass with thermal spacer blocks: adds R-2 to R-6 to the assembly by breaking the thermal bridge at each purlin. Preferred for energy code compliance.

3. Fabric-faced insulation (Simple Saver, Thermal Design Simple Saver): banded system that eliminates purlin compression, hits R-25 to R-38 assembly value, and gives a clean white interior.

4. Closed-cell spray foam under the roof deck: R-6.5/inch, seals the envelope, and stops condensation cold. Best system for retrofits, but 2–3× the cost of banded fiberglass.

Condensation control (the real reason to insulate)

In heated metal buildings, warm indoor moisture reaches the cold steel skin and drips. Insulation stops this ONLY if a continuous vapor retarder faces the warm side (interior).

Any breach in the vapor face — a screw penetration, a torn seam, a poorly-taped joint — will drip. Insist on written vapor-face detailing at every penetration.
